Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens

The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens was established in 1919 by businessman, Henry E. Huntington who fostered a devotion to research, education and beauty at the Huntington. The facility includes 2 art galleries, a vast library collection and research center, and the botanical gardens which host more than 500,000 visitors a year. In 1903, Huntington purchased the San Marino Ranch and through years of work this land has developed into the current Huntington Botanical Gardens. Today the property spans across 207 acres and is home to more that 14,000 varieties of plants. There are 14 different themed gardens at the Huntington including the Desert, Chinese, Japanese and Rose Gardens.

Descanso Gardens/Harvest Garden
Descanso Gardens is an urban retreat spreading over 150 acres in the San Rafael hills of Southern California. The gardens include a 5-acre International Rosarium, a 20-acre California Live Oak Forest, the Japanese Garden, a Camellia Forest, and a new sustainable exhibit called Nature’s Table, an edible display garden. Descanso is also home to the Boddy House, a stately 22-room mansion that serves as an art gallery.

The Harvest Garden is an educational and therapeutic garden program offered through Descanso. The Harvest Garden serves students with developmental disabilities from the local school districts. Students engage in adaptive garden activities and care for the gardens, fruit orchard, and greenhouse. Students are involved in all aspects of gardening from planting, to harvest, to cooking, to compost. Attendees will participate in a personal group tour of this great program.

Welcome Social
The Old Mill
The Old Mill was built in 1816 as a grist mill for Mission San Gabriel and is the oldest commercial building in Southern California. The building is a 2-story structure currently maintained by the Old Mill Foundation. The Diggers Garden at the Old Mill is featured as a place of charm, beauty and interest featuring native California trees and plantings. The centerpiece of the garden is the Pomegranate Patio where many civic, educational, and organizational events are held during the Spring and Summer months. This patio is the home of the California Philharmonic Chamber music concerts each Summer.
