2007 AHTA Conference

The 35th annual AHTA conference took place October 25 - 27 in Maryland.   Harvesting Best Practices in Horticultural Therapy was the theme of the conference.

Clare Cooper Marcus provided the keynote address which explored the history of healing landscapes in healthcare settings.  Marcus covered the areas of best practices to make healing gardens accessible and beneficial to all people - patients and visitors alike.  She suggested that Landscape Architects should be used to design healing gardens, although we all still need to understand more about how nature effects our physical and mental health.

The conference sessions were held at the beautiful Brookside Gardens in Wheaton, Maryland and Pre-conference tours (October 25) included:

  • Melwood, a facility that offers job training, employment, community living, and leisure and travel opportunities for people with developmental disabilities
  • Red Wiggler Community Farmsa non-profit organization that provides jobs for developmentally disabled adults through the business of growing and selling high-quality, home-grown vegetables

The welcome social reception was held October 25th at the U.S. Botanic Garden, with AHTA members enjoying private access to explore the USBG Conservatory for two hours.

The AHTA Board of Directors also held an all-day meeting in conjunction with the conference, on October 25.
