"Gardens for Everyone: A collaborative approach to programming and design"

Landscape Architect David Kamp has over 30 years of experience in the private and public sectors. Through practice, teaching, writing and advocacy, Mr. Kamp’s leadership and unique contributions promoting health through design are at the forefront of the profession. A Harvard Loeb Fellow in Advanced Environmental Studies, MacDowell Colony Fellow, member of the National Academy of Design and recognized through numerous awards and publications, David has been featured in four nationally and internationally broadcast documentaries. In 2012 University College Falmouth (UK) awarded David an Honorary Fellowship in recognition of his contributions to the landscape architecture profession.

David has dedicated his career to promoting the many facets and scales of health in the built environment. He founded Dirtworks Landscape Architecture PC, to explore the extent to which design with nature can help restore and protect the well-being of individuals and communities, elevate individual and collective experience, and advance the stewardship of our shared cultural and natural resources.

David's presentation will feature projects that developed a collaborative approach to expand therapeutic programs into public gardens with strong historical legacies. The presentation will emphasize:

  • Incorporating a team approach to the planning and design process, including horticultural therapists, administration, operations staff and donors to create a responsive and flexible garden.
  • A planning methodology that incorporates new and different “outside” partners to strengthen a connection to the larger community.
  • Design and program considerations responsive to individual physical and emotional needs, site considerations, funding strategies and health/safety issues.
