Advocacy is a vital element for advancing the profession of horticultural therapy. Part one will focus on how to advocate for ourselves and the profession. Part two will focus on how advocating for proclamations/resolutions in government can help raise awareness and build strategic partnerships for horticultural therapy as a profession. This session will look at case studies of successful efforts to pass resolutions at the state and local level. We will also focus on the importance of professionals working together to advance the profession.

Speakers:

Derrick Stowell
Derrick is the Education and Horticultural Therapy Program Administrator for the University of Tennessee Gardens. He has worked for the past 20 years in the non-profit sector, including working with the Amputee Coalition, an organization focused on advocating for people with limb loss. Derrick is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist and a Horticultural Therapist – Registered. He is the administrator for University of Tennessee’s Horticultural Therapy Certificate.

Laura Deprado

Laura DePrado is a horticultural therapist, HTR, B.S. and HT certificate recipient, author, journalist, columnist, and photographer, specializing in connecting people and plants for human health and well-being. DePrado is the founder, president and owner of Final Touch Plantscaping, LLC, which provides customized activities and programs using plants to impact social, physical and psychological well-being. She has traveled the world studying the ancient use of plants in health and medicine.   She is a three-time national presenter of the American Horticultural Therapy Association (AHTA) and recipient of the AHTA Alice Burlingame Humanitarian Award. Laura is published in the AHTA Journal of Therapeutic Horticulture, and Co Author of Rutgers University Fact Sheet about Horticultural Therapy. Laura is a well-known advocate for the profession, the professionals and the clients who are served, and has garnered recognition by Congress, Legislators, and Industry/Trade Associations.
