Professional horticultural therapists possess foundational expertise in plant science, human science, and horticultural therapy principles, alongside practical experience applying these methods.


The American Horticultural Therapy Association (AHTA) defines a horticultural therapist as a professional who:

  • Holds a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in horticultural therapy, or a bachelor’s degree supplemented by coursework in plant science, human science, and horticultural therapy.
  • Has completed a 480-hour supervised internship in horticultural therapy.
  • Is professionally registered as a horticultural therapist (HTR – Horticultural Therapist-Registered) with the AHTA.
