Applications Now Available for Therapeutic Garden Grants

DOWNERS GROVE, IL (April 25, 2017) – In 2017, National Garden Bureau and Sakata Seed America are partnering to provide $5,000 in grant money to be split among three therapeutic gardens in North America.

National Garden Bureau promotes the health and healing powers of human interaction with plants through a yearly grant program for therapeutic gardens. Sakata Seed America is a leader in breeding vegetable and ornamental seed and vegetative cuttings. They are committed to supporting organizations throughout North America to help people live productive, healthy and enriched lives.

Laura DePrado of Branchburg in Somerset County, NJ, and president of Final Touch Plantscaping LLC received the Chairman's Award from the Agriculture & Natural Resources Committee of the New Jersey Senate and General Assembly at the State Capitol, here, during celebration of Horticultural Therapy Week New Jersey. The award was presented by Assemblyman Robert Andrzejczak (D-1), chairman of the Agriculture & Natural Resources Committee, at the display showcasing horticultural therapy in Goldfinch Square.

AHTA Professional Registration Updates

Recently the AHTA Board of Directors voted to change the professional registration requirement regarding horticultural therapy coursework to allow for consistency with the AHTA Accredited Certificate Programs coursework.

These accredited horticultural therapy programs offer future practitioners an important pathway to becoming professionally registered. While each program is unique in course titles and credit quantity, their requirements must be aligned to meet those within the professional registration process.

Call for Nominations - AHTA Annual Awards

To further its mission to promote and advance the practice of horticultural therapy as a therapeutic intervention and rehabilitative modality, AHTA sponsors an annual awards program to recognize the contributions of individuals and organizations whose personal initiative and achievement define outstanding performance in the field.

AHTA awards and honors excellence in seven areas: research; humanitarian service; publication of a book, paper, or research; horticultural therapy program services delivered in a community setting; professional service; therapeutic garden design; and academic achievement. Awards are presented at the AHTA Annual Conference held each fall.

Charles A. Lewis Award - Call for Nominations

Nominations are now being accepted for the Charles A. Lewis Excellence in Research Award. This award is in honor of Charles A. Lewis, a pioneer in the field of people-plant interaction and innovative horticultural programs throughout the community.

This award is given to a research scientist or research scientists who have published outstanding horticultural therapy research in a horticultural or medical journal. It recognizes contributions to evidence-based research that demonstrates the effectiveness of horticultural therapy and serves to increase the awareness of research-based findings supporting the health benefits offered through horticulture.

Now Accredited - Chicago Botanic Garden Horticultural Therapy Certificate Program

AHTA is proud to announce that the Chicago Botanic Garden’s Horticultural Therapy Certificate Program was approved as an accredited certificate training program. It is a pleasure to welcome CBG into AHTA’s cohort of horticultural therapy training sites for many reasons. It provides a much needed site for those living near the Midwest areas of the country as well as offers training in a premiere botanical and enabling garden.

AHTA Announces New Management

AHTA is very pleased to announce its new management company, SBI Association Management, based in Seattle, Washington. Founded in 1981 to provide management services to the Washington State Society of Anesthesiologists, to date, their client list has grown to include national, state, and local organizations including several in the healthcare and landscaping sectors, which will allow them to fully understand our professional needs. SBI is also accredited by the AMC Institute, demonstrating their commitment to developing and implementing industry best practices.

What drew AHTA to select SBI is that it provides a multidisciplinary team of experienced association professionals, support staff and state-of-the-art technology and equipment. Using an integrated services model, AHTA will have access to an array of professionals who have designated expertise in areas such as membership services, marketing, communications and events planning.

Join us in Burlington, Vermont, September 8-9 (Pretours on September 7) for the 2017 AHTA Annual Conference. Hosted by the Northeast Regional Networking Group, the Conference will bring together horticultural professionals from around the world. Pretours will feature local gardens and programs. Add in the bonus of the Fall "Leaf Peeper" season and you have the perfect combination of networking, education and fun. The conference will be held at the Burlington Hilton Hotel in the heart of the city. 

We will open the hotel room block in January so you can plan ahead! Check the AHTA website often and watch your email for more information.

AHTA Fall Magazine and Journal of Therapeutic Horticulture are Available

The Fall edition of the AHTA Magazine is now available to AHTA Members on the AHTA Member Center. Featuring articles on the First International Conference on Horticultural Therapy and Therapeutic Landscaping in Guangzhou, China, the Therapeutic Use of the Harvest, and a preview of the 2016 AHTA Annual Confernence in St. Louis. The new edition also features a profile of AHTA Member Jennifer Smith, HTR.  The Journal of Therapeutic Horticulture is also available to members and non-members. AHTA members may access their free electronic copy of the Journal via the AHTA Members Only page. Hard copies of the Journal are available through CreateSpace at $25 for non-members and members receive a significant discount (approximately 80%!) using the member code found in the member center
