Trading in my Metro Cards for TractorsJoin us for a special Mid-Atlantic Horticultural Therapy Network (MAHTN) event on Saturday, October 9 at 10:00 AM to hear farmer and activist Karen Washington describe her life's journey starting from growing food in a Bronx community garden to growing food with friends on 3 acres of land in the Hudson Valley. This will include the challenges, successes, and rewards of working on the land, as well as good advice for those thinking about farming. Register NowMeet the SpeakerKaren is Co-owner/Farmer at Rise & Root Farm in Chester, New York. As an activist and food advocate, Karen in 2010 co-founded Black Urban Growers (BUGS), an organization supporting growers in both urban and rural settings. In 2012, Ebony magazine voted her one of their 100 most influential African-Americans in the country and in 2014 Karen was the recipient of the James Beard Leadership Award. Recently, in 2020, Essence magazine named Karen one of their Essential Heroes recipients. Karen serves on the Boards of the New York Botanical Garden, Soul Fire Farm, the Mary Mitchell Center, Black Farmer Fund and Farm School NYC.
